Maya Walks

Maya walked without support today, just shy of turning 13 months. In India, they’re celebrating Holi today.

The nanny told me that Maya had walked in the park without support today. Maya was asleep when I returned. I fervently hoped that she’d wake before Shanthala returned and that we could surprise her with the sight of Maya walking. But, Maya was still asleep when Shanthala returned. To top that, after she got up, she insisted on crawling or cruising, but not walking. A couple of hours later, after she finished her evening bottle of milk, Maya got down from the sofa and started walking. She got so excited, she walked fast and lost her balance a few times. Nonplussed, she continued walking for the next fifteen minutes or so.

All babies have a little protuberance at the bottom of their toes. A protuberance that begins to flatten as they walk till the toes assume the shape that we adults have. That little protuberance has been how I have marked time since she was born. It’s disappearance will be among the things I’ll miss as she grows up. Ah! The joy of watching your children grow, and the sorrow that with that growth, a smile, a babble, a crawl is lost to time.

The greatest glory lies in not never falling, but in rising every time one falls…….
This will be a source of inspiration for Maya as she grows. I wish her all the best.
